Integrated waste cycle


The A2A Group covers a wide range of activities connected with the management of waste which regard both the management of urban waste and services for the collection and treatment of special waste.
The Group companies in the environment sector guarantee internal services and work for municipal administrations and private companies. They act with qualified skills aiming at a constant improvement in the quality of the service safety and the protection of the environment and seeking new technologies designed to optimise the use of waste as a resource.
Besides managing urban and special waste, as described in the following paragraphs, the A2A Group designs and constructs plants both on its own behalf and on the behalf of external customers in Italy and abroad (the United Kingdom, Spain and Greece), to whom A2A transfers its technology and innovative solutions.

Recovery of the residual fraction of solid urban waste

During the year Ecodeco introduced planning solutions and engineered systems aimed at maximising the recovery of recyclable material. These systems are integrated with the by now consolidated Ecodeco technology of the biodessication of the residual fraction of urban solid waste by using two approaches:

  1. selection of the recyclable material before biodessication and subsequent sending of only the remaining portion for biodessication;

  2. selection of the material after biodessication.

The first solution enables percentages of recycled material of over 25% to be reached against higher investment expenditure and greater management complexity, while the second solution does not permit recycled material to exceed 15% but calls for lower investment expenditure and is characterised by greater management simplicity.
The equipment used to select the materials in the two different approaches calls for the use of high-precision optic scanners, electromagnetic separators, aerolic separators and vibrating sieves. The materials that can be selected are ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, heavy plastic, light plastic, paper, fine sub-sieved material for composting and inert rough materials (glass and stones).
The technologies used also ensure a high level of purity in the materials selected, reaching figures of 95%. That does not only translate into an economic benefit for the plant operator but also into a considerable environmental benefit because it allows the immediate use of the materials selected without further treatment.
